The History of Owasso

In 1881, Owasso originated as a settlement located in the Cherokee Nation near present day 66th St. North and 129th E. Ave. The original name was Elm Creek.  H.T. Richardson was the first to settle here.

In the summer of 1893, plans were made to develop a railway from Bartlesville to cattle ranches located around Bird Creek.  Several residences were in the area at the time as well as shops including a general store and a blacksmith.  The owner of the general store established the first post office in February of 1898.

The Kansas, Oklahoma Central & Southwester Railway Company about three miles of land northwest of the settlement in 1897 and damned a natural spring to form a water supply.  The depot was built about a mile south of the lake.  In 1898, the blacksmith shop moved to the new settlement and others in the area moved as well.  The new community was named after the post office, Elm Creek.

When the railroad was completed in 1899, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company (the parent company) took over and the first train came to town in November of 1899.  Land around the end of the railroad was developed and the word “Owasso” was used to identify this area.  Owasso is an Osage word meaning “turnaround.”  Owasso became the new name of the post office on January 24, 1900.  In 1905, the railroad was extended to Tulsa.

The original plat was signed in connection with the town’s incorporation on March 26, 1904 by the Secretary of the Interior. Owasso had a population of 379 when Oklahoma achieved statehood on November 16, 1907.  Until the water tower was built in 1924, providing water from Spavinaw, water was carried to town from Owasso Lake and sold by the barrel for 50 cents.

Buying or Selling

  • Why Use A Realtor?

Real estate transactions are one of the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. Transactions today usually exceed $100,000.

If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you deal with it without the help of a CPA?

If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without the help of an attorney?

Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR®.
