The History of Broken Arrow
Broken Arrow is a named after an old Creek Indian community in Alabama. When residents of that community moved to Oklahoma along the Trail of Tears, they settled here and named it after their old home. The settlement was located just a few miles south of what is present-day downtown Broken Arrow.
Several decades later, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railway company laid rails through the area and established a town site along the route. In 1902, three sites were sold to the Arkansas Valley Town Site Company. William S. Fears, the secretary of the company, named the locations. The site that was 18 miles south of Tulsa and five miles north of the Creek settlement was named Broken arrow.
Broken Arrow did not grow quickly in the early 1900s. The city’s newspaper was established shortly after founding and the first school was built in 1904. The city’s main commercial center was located among Main Street, with the churches being located there as well.
In the 1960s, the area began to prosper and grow rapidly. The Broken Arrow Expressway was constructed and connected Broken Arrow with downtown Tulsa. The population quickly expanded to more than 50,000 residents living there in 1990 and 74,000 by 2000.
Each year more and more dining and shopping opportunities become available in the city as it grows and expands. Today, the community is a blend of cultures including Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and families from Russian and Ukraine. What once was a blue collar and rural community has become a bustling city of commerce and diversity in just a few short decades.
